Program Overview

Background

According to the Big Picture Schools, in the U.S. one student drops out of high school every 12 seconds, and that this year alone 1,823,881 students have dropped out of high school. America's Promise Alliance claims that in the U.S nearly one in three students fail to graduate high school. Even if graduating high school is not in question for a particular student, career decisions can play an important role in motivation to succeed in school, whether to go to college, where to go to college, what major to pursue, what kind of college internship to pursue, and what to do after high school or college. In an effort to help students make a more informed decision about their future, reduce the high school dropout rate, and promote a possible career path, High School Interns (HSi), a Nashville based non-profit, has been started to offer high school students real world insight in a particular profession.

Program Overview: High School Summer Internship

For students who want to pursue a career in law, as an example, High School Interns offers a five-day high school summer law internship for a select number of students that includes learning about getting a job, life in law, workplace etiquette, being an intern in the workplace, and presenting to a group. Students spend several days over the course of the five-day internship in the employer's office as an intern among other activities. The program is designed to be selective and competitive.

Students must complete a resume, cover letter, sign a liability release agreement, and sign a name and likeness agreement prior to applying. The required documents must be submitted to the respective school representative by the application deadline. Applications submitted directly by students to High School Interns will not be considered. If a student is unsure of the school representative, it is suggested that the student first check with his or her college counseling department for more information.

Available Internships

Presently, internships are available in the following professional areas: legal, medical, non-profit, engineering, construction, and architecture. However, please check back as the number of professional areas may increase.

If an internship is not available in a professional area of interest, you may offer internship feedback through the Contact HSi page. Depending on the general level of interest in a particular profession, High School Interns may expand the number of professional areas to incorporate that specific profession. Another option, for students, is to formally request an internship. Please see the Formal Internship Requests section below for more information

Formal Internship Requests

High School Interns understands that there may be more professional interests than those presently available, and wants to provide an option for students to formally request an internship. If a student is serious about participating in the program, and finds that his or her profession is not available to do an internship in, that student may formally request an internship. To formally request an internship in a particular profession, a student must go to the Contact HSi page, complete the required fields, select formal internship request as the subject, and click submit to send the request. In addition, a student must go to the Student Cost section in the Program Overview page on the High School Intern's website and make a $150 deposit.

There are special rules that apply to a deposit that is made as part of a formal internship request. For a deposit that accompanies a formal internship request, if High School Intern's declines the request or is unable to find an employer in the requested profession, then the deposit is fully refunded. However, if an employer is found in the requested profession, then the deposit is not refunded in whole or in part - even if the student who made the request is not selected by that employer. Please note that there is no financial assistance available for a deposit that accompanies a formal internship request.
