When I was in high school, I dreamed of becoming successful in business. Completing a high school summer internship at a national background check company helped me realize that my dream could become a reality. This internship enabled me, while a high school student, to meet and learn from great people, understand the corporate work culture, and provide a real world perspective to a business career track.
When I enrolled in the Indiana University Kelley School of Business, my high school internship experience put me ahead of other students in terms of having a passion towards a major and confidence in life. When most students in college were deciding what major to choose or classes to take, I already had a real world reference from my high school internship, and contacts to call on if I had any questions. Even as a freshman, I could relate what I was learning in the classroom to what I had already learned in the working world. My success as a freshman was highlighted when I was inducted into both the National Society of Collegiate Scholars and the Phi Eta Sigma Honor Society.
Today, internships for high school students are still usually only available through close friends or family. Most students who want a high school internship cannot find one or do not even try because they do not think that they can get one. Therefore, I formed HighSchoolInterns.com, a non-profit organization, to help high school students have internship opportunities and begin college with the same sense of purpose that I was fortunate to have had.
